The “Gentle Art” as it is translates, is an infamous form of martial art that relies on leverage and positioning to subdue your opponent. The art uses strikes, holds, locks and submissions to overcome your opponent, even if he is much larger than you. Gracie Jiu Jitsu teaches self confidence, self esteem, focus, respect, and helps in many other aspects of life!
Gracie Jiu Jitsu is for everyone! Helio Gracie was a small and weak man when he developed the martial art, which makes it perfect for kids, women, and older persons as well as athletic and strong men.
Jiu Jitsu will help you relieve stress, sharpen your mind and body, all while having fun. You will share in some of the same goals as your training partners which will help you achieve them faster and more efficiently.
Gracie Jiu Jitsu is the most effective martial art in the world. It is not only a complete self defense system, it also relies heavily on technique over strength and will be useful for anyone who chooses to learn the Art.
While we start them as young as age 3, there is no limit in being too old to start. Grand Master Helio Gracie trained up until the week before he passed away at 95 years young. We have many students starting over the age of 50 and loving it!
The Gi is a tool to help you learn the Art of Jiu Jitsu more efficiently. When you’re not wearing the Gi the slipperiness and physical attributes come into play a lot more, than with it. Also the techniques available with the gear far outweigh than without, so this will sharpen your mind and reaction time due to being so many more options with it than without it.
Classes begin with some light cardio, calisthenics and stretching. Following our warm-up we will then begin drilling technique. These drills, when done over and over again, will help form muscle memory and enable students to retain technique. After drilling is completed we will begin to spar (or roll). Rolling is when students are able to put their techniques to the test with training partners who can resist and counter just as they would in an actual fight, providing valuable real-world experience should the techniques ever need to be applied in an actual fight. Rolling is done in a controlled environment, and never at full speed or full power until students are at the appropriate level. Beginners will often be placed with “veterans” who are more than happy to guide newer students and pass on their knowledge. All students will be worked with on an individual basis, therefore new students will always feel welcomed and never out of place.
