Gracie Jiu Jitsu Carlsbad Tournament!

Callum Kearns entered his second Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Tournament since starting with Gracie Humaita Jiu Jitsu Late last year. Callum fought two great matches and came up short with a silver medal. However we are very proud of Callum going out there and putting himself on the line.

Mick Moylan does it again with his dynamic jiu jitsu technique. Mick fought three matches in which he dominated the first two opponents finishing one with a choke in 10 seconds and the other with alot of points. His final match was real tough as he was up on points from a Atos jiu jitsu team. member, and got caught in the very end to lose his final and came up short with the silver medal. Next time he will get the gold as this was his first match at the Grey/white belt division. Proud of you!

Noah Moylan recently followed in his brother’s foot step and started Jiu Jitsu for his Martial Arts Training. Noah did his first tournament this past weekend at the Subcon brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournaments. Mick fought 3 matches winning the first 2. One he was up 34-0 which is a huge margin for a jiu jitsu tournament. In his final he was up on points and mounted on top of his opponent, no way for him to lose. But Noah is only 4 yrs old and jumped off his opponent running to coach Nick Stefan crying, so he was DQed and revived the Silver medal instead of the gold as he deserved. Great job and good lessoned learn buddy.

Ryan Bidwell also did his first Jiu Jitsu tournament. Ryan is only 4 yrs old and won his first match, and losing the next 2 matches to points both close matches. Very proud of how Ryan competed and gave it his all. He made the coaches at Carlsbad Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and mixed martial arts very proud.

Rene Molina was the only adult competitor. Rene a blue belt under Nick Stefan (Gracie Humaita) put his all on the line winning and losing some matches throughout the day. Rene got alot of experience and had a great time putting his jiu jitsu arsenal to the test. Very proud of all the competitor’s going out there and giving it there all.

Thanks from the Gracie Jiu Jitsu Carlsbad Competition Team!

Gracie Jiu Jitsu Carlsbad Instructor’s Course – Level 1

The level 1 Instructor’s Course is coming up quickly at Gracie Humaita Carlsbad. This course is meant to provide current instructors and students the tools they need to become confident and educated instructors. In this course you will learn how to run, teach, and put together classes for interaction in self defense and brazilian jiu jitsu. We will go over everything – from how to deal with injuries in class, to learning how to break down moves, to teaching in a class that YOU put together yourself.

Saturday Feburary 7th at 9am – until we’re done! (plan to stay all day) At the Gracie Humaita Carlsbad Academy

Q: Can anyone do the class?

A: Yes

Q: Are people from other gyms or styles allowed to take the course?

A: Yes, as long as approved by the Gracie Humaita organization

Q: Will I be able to use this course to get a teaching job?

A: Yes, but there will have to be an opening somewhere and most schools are going to want a purple belt (minimum) teaching, but for a karate school that has a very limited grappling program, you can probably run the entire program for them.

Q: What is the cost?

A: $150.00 for the course which includes a manual and certificate upon completion of the entire course. We will also provide pizza and water for lunch.

Q: Where do I sign up?

A: Email us at: info@graciecarlsbad.com or call us at 760-918-0566 to let us know that you want to take part in the course. Space is limited so the sooner you reserve your spot the better chance you will have getting in!

Kids Martial Arts in Carlsbad

Why choose Gracie Humaita over other martial arts or jiu jitsu academies? We have the most extensive and responsive curriculum built by Grandmaster Helio Gracie, The Founder of Gracie Jiu Jitsu. While gyms like Gracie Barra which is a franchise, so anyone can open, Master Royler Gracie is selective with who he chooses to run or own a Gracie Humaita Dojo. At other gyms you show up get checked in and get promoted, very easy right? well what does that teach your child? It teaches them that hard work does not pay off since it doesn’t mean that they have to actually learn the techniques to move forward. At Gracie Humaita we make sure each kids works on what they need to , as to improve to their fullest potential. Come bring your child or yourself and try out one of our world renown classes in Self defense, Womens, Childrens, Competition, or our Faction Muay Thai program.

Strength in Jiu Jitsu!

Strength in Jiu Jitsu!

Often times, when starting out in jiu-jitsu, students are told to “slow it down” or “relax” through a set of techniques. The truth of the matter is that wherever you are in your jiu-jitsu journey, there is always room for more. More efficiency, more balance, more improvement. Here are some ways to reduce the amount of strength in your techniques when applicable as well as differentiating between limiting the strength you put into your practice and developing strength as an athlete.

We all have been victim to the enraged white belt who is hungry for that collar choke or arm-bar. The primal nature of grappling breeds this misconception that in order to be successful in beating your opponent, you must be strong. While there are instances in grappling where strength is a valuable attribute, more often than not, being patient and allowing your opponent to make a mistake will open up an opportunity for you to attack without strength as the “prime mover” of the submission.

Strength may not be the main focus of your practice when it comes to jiu-jitsu, but that does not mean the development of strength should not be emphasized. It simply means that taking strength out of the equation will help sharpen or enhance the other tools in your toolbox be it speed, concentrating your body weight in more advantageous areas for control, economy of motion, etc.

Just as other senses are heightened when one is diminished, according to Josh Vogel’s article “Do You Rely Too Much on Strength?” he states that “this is a form of constraints-based practice to develop the purest technique possible by taking away attributes. It is similar to removing a limb from play to simulate injury in training or closing your eyes to develop sensitivity of touch in certain situations”.

I feel that the principles used in jiu-jitsu are commonly used in life. You cannot muscle your way out of every problem. Some require finesse and poise. With that being said, if you would like to read more on this subject and many others, please refer to this link: https://breakingmuscle.com/learn/do-you-rely-too-much-on-strength.
